Not Realistic - Real

I was watching TV this weekend and tumbled into a building show on PBS featuring a young couple (maybe linked just for TV purposes - it wasn't exactly clear) who were building one of those multi-dormered suburban mansions. You know the types - the ones that were so popular before the real-estate bust: acres of drywall, cultured stone this, electronically controlled that, blah, blah.

As it happens one of my (many) unrealized life goals, is to someday build the house of my imagination. If I ever get that far - you heard it here first - I will not allow the builders to put anything in it that provides a realistic facsimile of a real thing. I want plaster walls. Doors that are solid wood. I want a fireplace - actually, several fireplaces. These fireplaces are to be built of stone, or brick, or some other form of honest masonry. More importantly, on one will be able to turn them on and off with a remote. Logs, smoke, ashes. That's for me.

Not that you asked, but I have been building this house in my mind for years and it just kind of spilled out.

In other news... Still unpacking the old van with the unsold goods of last weekend. I went to an auction preview on Thursday and didn't go the auction on Sunday. This is a first. I think it's progress.

I'm with you on that - proper solid things like we used to have.

Logs and smoke are my favourite thing right now

I don't know if my comment from yesterday disappeared or not. If this is a duplicate, consign it to the ether.

Anyway, the downside of building your own home, perfect though your design may be, is dealing with contractors. Very few things in life are as stressful as that.

Otherwise, I agree with you regarding the quality of stuff today. It sucks in spades.

Cheers.

Lulu - Nice to hear from you. I want to hear more why logs and smoke are high on your list at the moment. Aren't you off in Africa or Asia? I am going to check.

Hey R- Don't know what happened to that comment but I am glad you tried again. In my dream house scenario I am unutterably rich, so I am not troubled by contractors. I know. Ha!
You speak like one who knows. Have you built your own house? Done an extensive remodel? I heard someone interviewed on the radio the other day who said she really needed to remodel, her kitchen was from the 1980s. I laughed. Ours is still partly in the 1880s! See ya.

Too many lawsuits involving crappy contractors to count. It never works out.

Cheers.

A proper house with proper walls sounds good. My idea of heaven. Hope all is well.

I saw a picture once of a great room in a big old house. The doors were huge with the knobs at about shoulder height for a woman. It wasn't a movie set and I just loved the idea of living in a house like that.

I would never want to build such a place. I agree, dealing with contractors is a nightmare.

Hey Mme. I get the impression that they are pretty strict across the pond on building codes etc. Still, no one bothers with plaster anymore, do they?

Hi Charlene - Thanks for stopping in. I know I have seen similar giant doors like that in films. I liked it too.

two things - i would like either a house like the hobbits live in - mainly for the large front door with the knob in the middle - or the Skeleton Key House - down a long sandy road in the coastal plain of SC - haunted and all....
large, rambling with azaleas threatening to overtake the grounds...
