Goin' to New York

Me and some of my kinfolk are leaving these hills for a few days and heading down to NYC.

I am little worried that they won't let me onto Manhattan island. Do they still have those style police posted on the bridges and in the tunnels? I was really concerned about that kind of thing during high school and college years growing up as I did in darkest Schenectady. I remember a kid from Long Island paying me the ultimate compliment when I was 20. He found out that I was from upstate: "Really?" he said. "I thought you were from the City." Well, I was trying harder in those years.

Thankfully, it is too cold for the turnip truck so we have bought train tickets. I'll let you know how it goes.

I hear that they have people with thermometers at the entrance to some restaurants - checking your 'cool' factor

I have been to Schenectady, about 16 years ago, to visit people who taught at Union College. Went to NYC too and my first stop was somewhere in Spanish Harlem. Felt rather intimidated by the whole thing really. Fab city, but I couldn't believe it when I saw cops eating donuts. I felt it was put on specially for the tourists. Enjoy it!

Have fun and make sure you bring me back something. Perhaps a T-shirt, size Medium. Isn't that what we provincial tourists do?

Cheers.

Lulu - Darn! You mean if I get past the style inspectors at the gate I am still subject to being discovered. I hope there are no actual alarms.

Mme. I wonder if I know the people you visted in my old hometown 16 years ago? I don't know many Union faculty members but my favorite High School English teacher was (probably still is) married to a prof of philosphy. They used to take Union students to England (Bath, as I recall) all the time...

R. - I will keep my eyes peeled for something appropriate to adorn a midwesterner.

When in NYC, dressed in that very UK tourist look, I went into a wonderful shop to buy an evening wrap, the shop was a joy.... so much choice... so many colours. The shop assistant and a very sophisticated local lady, took pity on me and promptly set about finding the right wrap for me, I just had to surrender and go with the experience (which was fun) they draped me, wrapped me up in a host of shawls, stoles and wraps, before announcing they had found the perfect one! They were right, it is a beautiful shade of amethyst, with delicate little crystals, a much better souvenir of NYC that an 'I Love New York' T-shirt. We are not city people but we had a fantastic time in NYC
